Mkhitar Heratsi Yerevan State Medical University (YSMU) is Armenia’s first and most prestigious medical institution. Founded in 1920 as the Medical Faculty of Yerevan State University and established as an independent institution in 1930, it was named after the medieval physician Mkhitar Heratsi in 1995. Today, YSMU is a central pillar of medical education in Eastern Europe.

YSMU offers comprehensive six-year programs in General Medicine (MBBS), Dentistry, Pharmacy, Public Health, and Military Medicine. Instruction is available in English, Russian, and Armenian, and the university operates two teaching hospitals—“Heratsi” and “Muratsan”—where students receive practical clinical training early in their studies. With approximately 8,000 students, including around 1,800 international students from over 40 countries, it is a multicultural and academically vibrant campus.

The university is officially recognized by WHO, the Medical Council of India/NMC, FAIMER/ECFMG, and UNESCO. YSMU is active in international academia through memberships in global associations (IAU, IFMSA, IPSF, ADEE, WFME) and collaborations with around 30 universities worldwide. Over 30,000 graduates practice medicine globally, including more than 500 doctors in California, USA.
