Established on June 23, 1919, Orel State University (OSU) is a multidisciplinary flagship institution in the Orel region. It evolved from a higher pedagogical institute and was transformed into a classical university in 1996. Today, OSU encompasses a broad range of academic programs across medicine, engineering, natural sciences, humanities, and more.

OSU comprises 22 institutes/faculties and runs 297 educational programs, staffed by around 940 teachers (including 180 Doctors of Sciences and 807 Candidates of Sciences).
