Established in 1906 as the 2nd Moscow State Medical Institute, it achieved “National Research University” status in 2010 and was later renamed in honor of the famed surgeon Nikolay Pirogov. Known informally as “Second Med” in Moscow, it has a legacy of innovation—being the first in Russia to offer medical education to women and one of the world’s first to establish a Pediatrics Faculty and a Biomedicine school.

The university provides a wide range of programs including General Medicine (MBBS), Dentistry, Pharmacy, Pediatrics, Medical Biophysics, Clinical Psychology, and Social Work. It hosts eight faculties across 115 departments, supported by over 2,000 academic staff. It has strong research credentials, with collaborations in clinical trials, biomedical studies, and partnerships with Russian and international institutions. The campus includes simulation centers, cutting-edge labs, affiliated hospitals, a digital library of over 750,000 items, sports facilities, and a riverside recreation camp.

Pirogov attracts around 8,300 students, including about 700–950 international students from over 50 countries. It’s fully accredited by Russian educational authorities and recognized by WHO, NMC (India), ECFMG, FAIMER, WDOMS, making its graduates eligible for exams like NEET, USMLE, and PLAB. English-taught MBBS started in 2013, and double‑degree programs are available with universities in Europe. It enjoys a strong reputation for producing clinically-ready graduates.
